The Etymology of Dementia

Valeria Rodrigo
Brooklyn, New York

for, para, after, después de Paula

dementare    as in to errant
this mind, scathes mountains for a saint’s
kiss, only she would be lustrated his lover.

ia                            as in the swelled feminine
country, inplagued, mirrored in her
silvered flowerbeds.

demens                                as in the outside of her
warped hands, senses that allowed to make
wild home: adorn in linen fractals.

de                                                                    as in far away
from the knighthood of a woman’s labor
at the hands of an intolerant son.

mente                                                                    as in the mind that laments
a howled protest when a poem’s voice is finished.

mens                                                                                as in to think, my ground
christened in release of her gift: she
remembers me every return.
